Last year, I worked with Milton Keynes Arts Centre on a retelling of the Celtic folk tale of The Holly and the Oak Kings. It’s a story about the seasons here in the UK as well as the necessary reciprocity between the nature and humans. I was asked to retell the story before visiting primary schools to get input from local kids. They had some great ideas about what the Holly and oak kings might smell like, how they might move and who their friends might be. On midwinters afternoon a lantern parade was held and a soundscape was played of my story mixed with the kids voices.
It felt like such a wonderful opportunity to share Celtic folklore as well as a positive story about reciprocity and friendship with nature. Our community really appreciates it.
