Heartwood is a trio of singers and instrumentalists, and we began creating The Well Tree three years ago, inspired by our time songwriting together in wild places. We wanted to figure out how to share these new songs, (that felt like gifts from the trees, and stones, and flowers) in a way that wasn’t just a concert, and so we began to weave them into a story. In the process of creating the musical we were deeply inspired by the powerful lessons of reciprocity and generosity shared in Robin Wall Kimmerer’s writings.
The Well Tree is a ‘singing story’ about wild journeying and remembering deep kinship — the tale of a young wood cutter moving beyond the fog of isolation and shame to meet songbirds, snails and ancient trees as she travels through these unraveling times, finding her way home. It is full of vocal harmony, storytelling, puppetry, audience participation, and a “crankie” (a scrolling illustration.)
The Well Tree has been taking us on quite the journey! It has been such an honor to sing the story to life with audiences in the US, CA and the UK. What a ride! We are thrilled to bring The Well Tree to Philadelphia on May 30th and to collaborate with Plant Baby Plant on a “Bloom” at Bartram’s Garden in association with Rootsong premiere and the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society.
