The Vedgewater Community Garden has become an integral part of the Edgewater neighborhood in Chicago, providing a lush green space where we can come together to connect with each other and the Earth.
In a city where most people do not have a backyard or garden space where they live, we are able to provide nearly 200 gardeners with their own plot where they can grow food for their families, friends, and neighbors.
Our community logged over 1,000 volunteer hours in the garden in 2025, allowing us to plant native fruit trees and shrubs, improve our infrastructure, and donate over 500 pounds of garden-grown organic to a local mutual aid group. We also worked with a local entomologist to put a beehive in the garden and were able to get our first harvest of honey from the hive this last year.
Throughout the season, we also host community events where we can learn and celebrate together. Last year, some of our most well-attended events were an autumn harvest potluck to celebrate the end of the season and an educational butterfly identification workshop.
