In 2021, a group of citizens came together to start a community garden. During the planning stage, we lost a lot of volunteers due to some neighborhood backlash but those that were committed stuck it out. Through deep commitment to build community/create/feed/educate post-Covid, an amazing space was born and has been fostered by 100% volunteer work. The support of our amazing little town has made this possible – both on a municipal level and community level. Local businesses step up to support where we need it.
As the community garden has grown, so have our “dreams”. In the last year another smaller group of community members helped “fix” a storm water issue in the park the garden resides in. Last spring we created mini wildflower meadows with native plants and to counteract some of the monoculture lawn that just was not able to handle the water draining. We added small swales and rock drainage where necessary, built a rain garden and a dry bed filled with native plants where they thrive and the deep roots would suck up some of the water from the big storms we have now.
This year we had more goals – beautifying a newly built pavilion while helping our stormwater problem & educate. We did it! Our town installed gutters & donated rain barrels. Volunteers built the beds filled with natives. They take care of them. And it worked – the stormwater is not an issue anymore!
