The Alberta Native Plant Rescue Foundation (ABNPR) is a volunteer-driven conservation organization focused on rescuing native plants and locally adapted seed that would otherwise be lost to development and land-use change. We work with developers, municipalities, conservation organizations, Indigenous communities, restoration practitioners, and volunteers to conserve Alberta’s native plant heritage before it is permanently lost.
Rather than viewing development and conservation as opposing forces, ABNPR helps bridge the two. Through cooperation and careful planning, volunteers rescue native plants and collect locally adapted seed from approved sites, enabling these valuable genetic resources to support restoration, conservation, education, research, and naturalization projects across Alberta.
Since our first rescue in 2022, volunteers have rescued hundreds of thousands of plants and collected locally adapted seed from dozens of sites while building partnerships that demonstrate native plant rescue can be successfully integrated into responsible development.
Our vision is simple: development is a reality, but native plants and locally adapted seed deserve the opportunity to contribute to Alberta’s future. By rescuing what would otherwise be lost and connecting those resources with restoration and conservation efforts, we help Alberta’s native ecosystems thrive.
