One morning at breakfast my partner said, nonchalantly, “do you want to plant a tree outside?” And of course the answer was yes! I suggested a Serviceberry, a tree whom I have loved for many years. Our main inspirations, aside from being tree and plant lovers, were to add more shade to our west-facing windows for the hot summer months, to provide food and shelter for the birds and pollinators, maybe have a few berries leftover for us humans to savor, and to add beauty and canopy to our urban neighborhood.
We did this all on one day (April 18), a very cold and windy day. Our neighbor lent us his pick up truck and the experts at the local nursery helped us choose a beautiful 12′ tree. The digging and planting itself was a joy, evidenced by our very muddy hands.
