We moved into our home in 2023 and immediately started converting the lawn and traditional landscaping into a native ecological habitat. Our home uniquely fronts three main sidewalk thoroughfares, and we wanted to take advantage of this by having our garden engage and inspire neighbors as they walk by.
We started by installing metal signs at each native plant, so that curious passer-by could identify what was blooming. Next we replaced a grassy hillside with a strawberry patch with an invitation for people to stop and pick berries.
Most recently we removed a long row of privet to install an edible fence, planting blueberries, elderberries, wild strawberries, and American hazelnut – and more to come! We also converted even more lawn to garden and upgraded our Halloween skeleton to the Garden Poet.
Every time I see someone stop to read a sign, watch the kids cross the street to greet Skelly, or have a neighbor ask about something we planted, I feel such a sense of community. And one of the biggest joys is hearing one of those neighbors say, “You’ve inspired me.”
