We saw a need for community around native plants in Utah. In 2024, a couple friends banded together to throw a native seed swap – it was so successful that we went big in 2025 with Utah Native Plant Society (UNPS). We had 400 attendees, 35 local businesses, nonprofits, government departments and educational organizations, 4 panels with 14 total local experts, 9 incredible classes, 100s of live native plants, and 1000s of native seed packets. To keep the focus on community, we had a “no selling” rule. It was amazing to see everyone come together to share and learn.
After the event, we asked for feedback from everyone who came. 96% of participants feel more motivated to grow native plants and plan to incorporate native plants in their garden!
What was the most meaningful part of PlantFest?
“The seeds! When trying to go native, cost and access have been huge barrier, so having so much access to not just natives, but free natives was so impactful!”
“[I loved] getting to hear from the other panelists about their experiences and hearing from folks afterwards that they were stoked to transition into the field of plants!”
“It was very meaningful to me to see other people who are interested in Utah’s native plants. I brought my young kids and they had a wonderful time talking with the people at the booths and learning about plants. They are excited to plant the seeds with me, it will be a great family activity.”
We hope to increase our events and outreach, especially to make native plants more accessible to everyone in Utah. Part of this has been navigating getting support from local organizations and businesses, increasing our social media, and holding more events. We are also starting work on a Utah Native Plant Propagation Network to connect experts and professionals around Utah to make natives more accessible.
