The Green Herons opened when schools shut down in 2020 as a project to connect our kids back to nature during a time of chaos. Our goal was to connect our children to the natural rhythms of our planet, increasing time spent outdoors, and finding purpose in doing what we could to fix the problems that we found in our local environment.
Over the past six years, we have grown into a well-known support to the environmental movement in the Niagara Region and beyond. Every goal that these youth have set has been accomplished while also increasing their knowledge of the natural world, taking risks, playing, and building memories and relationships that will last a lifetime.
Last year, they were honored to receive both the National Youth Climate Activist Award and the Canadian Wildlife Federations Wade Luzny Youth Conservation Award. They have close partnerships with Carolinian Canada, The Canadian Wildlife Federation, The Jane Goodall Institute of Canada, the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority, Summer House Park, and the David Suzuki Foundation. They run a native plant nursery and free seed program, fund a dumpster and manage trash removal from Jordan Harbor, supply Land Care Niagara with habitat boxes for the Woodworking for Nature Program, manage invasive species projects, teach native planting courses, and run a Turtle Rescue Program while still planning special projects.
We are hoping to encourage people to look at their own backyards and see how they can improve habitat for our ecosystem. We are building a free plant stand at the road to support native gardeners with access to our plants, seed sharing, food, books, and a tool share program to make it easier for other small groups to increase their impacts. We want neighborhoods to connect and get to know each other so that we can help re-wild corridors and bring back at-risk habitats. We want young people to feel connected to this work so they understand the importance of creating solutions for our planet.
