Our community was gifted with a Thomas Danbo Troll, and thousands of people visit him every year. But the forest by the parking lot and in the park was overgrown with invasive ivy, blackberry, and holly.
I wanted visitors to enjoy Oscar the Bird King troll, and not cringe at the sight of all the invasive plants. So, I signed up to be a volunteer, and went to work in January, 2025. I had all the tools and experience to do it well and safely, and it was a gift to me that the Parks Department let me do the work on my own, and just report back what I did.
I started at the parking lot, with the blackberries, and then the trees covered with ivy one could see from the parking lot. Then I moved closer to Oscar, and followed the trails visitors were most likely to take to get down to the Point Robinson Lighthouse, and worked on ivy trees, holly, and the worst of the blackberry. I girdled the holly, and cut the rest.
Now visitors to Oscar no longer have to look at the tall trees in the park covered with ivy, and the holly will slowly die from the girdling of their bark.
