The Rattlesnake Gutter Great Plant Giveaway has evolved over the last 25 years as a way for us to positively impact the energies of our community and the planet by giving away our excess plants to others. Our mission has been to further community connections and culture, to increase our collective understanding of the beauty of where our food comes from, and to further the creation of interdependence in our community through the nurturing of food, herb and flower seedlings, including native pollinator plants for our bee friends.
Our efforts expanded in response to the pandemic when it was clear that many people in our communities were experiencing food insecurity. We sought the assistance of friends and community members. Volunteers now help with soil management, planting, labeling, fertilizing, (yup, the organic stinky stuff), watering, frost alert covering, transplanting and transferring of seedlings out to the pallets in the yard on Giveaway day. With more than twenty volunteers planting thousands of plants to give away, in the last years it has expanded to “the favorite community holiday” in our area with hundreds of people attending.
Our plants are all free, a true giveaway. For a few years, we received some community financial support through our local cultural council but now we are supported by donations which are accepted but not required. Our dream is that this will become a community self-supporting effort that can continue after we are no longer able.
