Home gardens matter.
My goal is to create a beautiful, landscaped space that is 70 percent native plants. This garden is small, sized just under a half acre. It is in the heart of a small town in Kentucky and I’ve gardened here for decades. Over time, my garden has changed but native plants were always interesting to me. I’ve documented over 70 bird species in this 60 x 300 foot space, as well as many kinds of insect life. Inviting local people to my garden creates awareness that native plants knit beauty and life together.
I dream of having my former college campus become a leader in planting natives. There are lots of acres at schools and campuses where young people can be influenced.
