I’ve always been surrounded by gardeners but never took it up myself. My grandma Audrey who lived on Burnside Street in Portland was a celebrated gardener. She was always an inspiration. I think I was always too afraid to start a garden because I had moved all my life. Never in the same house more than two years or so. So I always figured what was the point. Once I started, I scratched an itch I didn’t know I had. I learned quickly that you can start a garden no matter how much space you have and that anything you can contribute to the earth is worthwhile. Even if for a short time. A singular Sunflower planted can be food for birds for months. I learned to co-exist with nature and not work against it. That some things work well in your space and others just don’t and that’s ok. It teaches you to let go. The soil in my specific micro-climate in zone 8b is really hard and rocky. I had to do a lot of amendments to grow certain things. While other things learned thrive in harsh conditions. So far, it’s just me working on my garden and sometimes my not-so-helpful but cute toddler. I am still working on the older kids. I have fallen in love with flowers specifically, and am growing every cut flower you can think of. I just love watching the bees hop around. I have unbeknownst to me brought them into the house while they still slept on a petal.
