Dayton Area Wild Ones helps area citizens advocate for more native-plant-friendly and wildlife-friendly weed and landscaping ordinances.
Since 2024, Dayton Area Wild Ones has led a regional advocacy effort to support residents facing weed and landscaping ordinances that restrict native plantings. The work focuses on suburban communities in the Dayton, Ohio area where outdated or unclear codes have resulted in citations for native landscapes.
The effort began when local residents and Wild Ones members were cited for native plant gardens. Chapter leaders organized residents, provided guidance, and engaged directly with local officials through meetings, public testimony, and educational outreach.
As a result, the City of Beavercreek adopted a revised ordinance that removed several restrictive provisions, protected existing native landscapes, and explicitly allowed native plants. In a parallel effort, Washington Township trustees declined to pass a restrictive resolution and agreed to collaborate with Wild Ones.
This ongoing campaign helps homeowners, communities, and ecosystems by reducing barriers to native landscaping and advancing more equitable, science-informed local policy.
This work has been led by Dayton Area Wild Ones chapter leadership and members, including officers and volunteers who organized residents, provided technical guidance, and participated in public meetings and testimony. Local homeowners and community members played a key role by sharing their experiences, speaking at hearings, and advocating for change. City and township officials in Beavercreek and Washington Township engaged in dialogue that helped shape improved outcomes.
The chapter helped residents move from confusion and fear of citations to confident, informed civic participation. We hope eventually to help pass native-plant-friendly ordinances in all communities in our area- an initiative mirrored in Wild Ones Chapters nationally.
