The Kenny Neighborhood Association Grass Lake Restoration Team has been hosting buckthorn removal events since 2024 to regain space overtaken by this aggressive species on this small urban lake and wetland in Minneapolis. The goal is to replace the buckthorn thickets with native plants, and specifically a garden on the southeast shore during the 2026 growing season. The overarching goal is to learn how to improve, maintain, and expand the natural habitat.
To build on the success of our buckthorn removal events, during fall 2025, the team applied for and received a $6000 grant from the Garden Club of Minneapolis’ Deane Fund. This grant is helping us pay for flowers, grasses, shrubs, and trees where buckthorn previously grew. We will be specifically focusing on a 100′ stretch of shoreline on the southeastern edge of the wetland with the intention of harvesting seeds for future seasons.
