Farm 51 is a small urban oasis that grows food, medicine, and dye plants in West Philly.
Farm 51 is a miniature food forest in the heart of West Philadelphia, full of fruit trees, flowers, medicinal and dye plants, bees, and birds. We grow food with and for neighbors, and host events like protest print-ins, herbal medicine workshops, celebrations, and garden days. We aim to provide community nourishment in the form of food, art, and gathering–from workshops to workdays to shared meals and communal dye baths. The farm is a soft landing in a busy city, where people can shape their relationships to land, including settler and diasporic identities. We work hard and invite our neighbors to collaborate with the land, and to deepen shared resilience in the midst of climate crisis.
We (Jackie, Ro, and Emerald) are supported by bees, trees, the Neighborhood Gardens Trust, Philadelphia Horticultural Society Community Garden Program, and the Free Brunch Program.
We want to continue to thrive while collectively moving at a slower pace than capitalist conceptions of “business as usual” require. We want to keep the land safe from development by working with the Neighborhood Garden Trust to establish Farm 51 as a garden and community space. We want to expand our dye garden and hold more community events. Above all, we want to continue gathering to honor the plants and the work that went into growing them, and to share in the joy of abundance as a step in creating a more equitable, intentional, and caring neighborhood.
