The earth is not a dead thing you can claim. It belongs to us all. And when it is being neglected and desperately needs help, it matters where I stand, as Robin pointed out.
And so, I stood on a hill at my apartment complex, and sowed native pollinator seeds in a patch of land I didn’t “own” without a shred of guilt. I sowed as many native plant seeds as I could obtain in order to combat the takeover of Reed Grass, Buckthorn, and mugwort on the slope of a neglected slope leading to a wetland area.
Did I get permission? No. Was it illegal? Depends on who you ask. But if you asked Mother Nature, I am pretty sure she’d be ok with it.
I removed 6 giant bags of trash, planted milkweed, meadow rue, and a kaleidoscope of beneficial nectar and host plants. Now we wait and see. I did my part, now it’s in Mama Nature’s hands.
I decided to do it again, though, perhaps in another nearby location needing some love and rewilding- like a guerilla (gardener) in the mist.
