The inspiration for this project is this ecosystem is behind my childhood home. In fact, my neighborhood was built on this ecosystem. I grew up with many joyous experiences in this habitat that taught me so much and it was incredibly formative in my desire to pursue conservation as a career. As I progressed through my career, it became increasingly difficult to return home and see the same problems affecting this place that I love. Additionally, seeing the threats being inflicted on our ecosystems on a national scale, I decided it was time to return the favor at the local level, in this place I love and owe my best efforts to. But also, with the intention of inspiring a grassroots movement in my community.
I got permission from the town and relevant landowners last summer, and with the fundraising of my community I have been able to accomplish lots of native planting, trash pickup, and invasive plant management.
The most recent big news is I recently purchased a piece of land that was under threat of development! So, now I “own” a piece of this special place and am actively exploring avenues to permanently protect via local conservation entities!
Much of this effort so far would not be possible without the verbal support of Ipswich River Watershed Association and Grow Native Massachusetts. They have been spreading the word for my project and even organizing events for me to face my community.
The three pillars of support are fundraising, volunteering, & advocacy. Spreading the word is just as valuable as money. Volunteering time is just as valuable as money. Any help counts because I am mostly doing the ground work alone. I have big dreams both for this place and success here could build for momentum to create a new era for my community built on stewardship and love and shared abundancy! I’m actively working on forming relationships with local Indigenous partners too, given their intimate history with these habitats.
