In 2019, as a member of the Township Environmental Board, I decided to lead an effort in my community to restore wildlife habitat which was lost due to development. With support from the township administration and the Environmental Board, I registered our Township with the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) “Habitat Community” program.
Our Township has since met the all of the requirements to become a certified NWF Habitat Community, and continues to find ways to restore wildlife habitat and green space within our sprawling suburban Township. We now have funding in place to support an ongoing tree planting effort, and individual residents continue to work on reducing lawn and creating native gardens to support valuable wildlife species.
I would like to keep spreading the word to our residents. We have a long way to go and many, many lawns to convert (either partially or completely) to native gardens. But with no funding and just me working on this aspect of the effort, it is an uphill climb.
