Brooklyn Center for Sacred Activism is an emergent and experimental community of spiritual changemakers.
Brooklyn Center for Sacred Activism (BCSA) grew out of a desire to bridge contemplative spirituality and justice, i.e. personal and collective transformation. Too many activist spaces were lacking in wholeheartedness and any real connection to the self, each other, Earth, and Spirit; too many spiritual and religious spaces were (are) effete and navel-gazey. We started in 2016 as a live-in community in Crown Heights where we hosted a weekly potluck dinner and sacred activist liturgy.
We went dormant during the pandemic, but we reignited the dinners as a monthly program hosted at a church/zendo in 2025. Many of us regularly engage in direct action and are aching for spaces that are spiritually nourishing in an open and inclusive way. In this time of authoritarianism, ideological divisions, and an ever-worsening climate crisis, we need communities that are deeply rooted in radical trust, courage, and care.
We are inspired by the work of Andrew Harvey, a mystic scholar who coined the term “sacred activism,” as well as teachers like Adam Bucko, Matthew Fox, and Bayo Akomolafe, and movement mentors like Dr. King and Dorothy Day. We hold the question: How powerful could our movements be if they were grounded in Spirit?
BCSA is guided by a five-person volunteer Mission Council of activists, organizers, healers, and artists. We are hosted by Christ Church Cobble Hill, which is a leader in interreligious engagement, and have collaborated with the Poor People’s Campaign, Extinction Rebellion, the Global Purpose Movement, GreenFaith, and community groups. Adam Bucko has been a key mentor since our inception.
Funding would help us offer more programming to bring together sacred activists. Our first dream project is to offer a movement chaplaincy training program to guide more folks into support roles, especially as the authoritarian crisis worsens and the militarized presence increases in our city. We’d also like to grow our eco-spirituality programming to help people connect more deeply to the more than human world (yes, even in NYC!).
